The University Institute ECOAQUA, was present at the European Maritime Day to offer sustainable solutions in marine aquaculture

Gercende Courtois de Viçose, of the University Institute ECOAQUA from the ULPGC, was part of an international group of researchers and entrepreneurs which detailed, during a session  of the European Maritime Day in Italy, the evolution of a collaborative research on procedures for the production of marine species from low trophic levels in the Atlantic Ocean

Scientists and entrepreneurs from the AquaVitae European project recently participated to a workshop in Italy entitled 'Joining forces from Europe to South Africa to develop new production systems in the marine environment'. This initiative joins the research of different working groups from various European companies and universities. Gercende Courtois de Viçose represented Spain, who leads one case stusy through University Institute of Aquaculture and Sustainable Marine Ecosystems (ECOAQUA).

The AquaVitae project aims to develop sustainable solutions for the  aquaculture production of low trophic species in the Atlantic Ocean by optimizing aquaculture systems and procedures to encourage the development of the blue economy.

During the workshop, the researchers presented the results of a study in which they used the same species and the same procedures to illustrate the synergies between partner countries. The aim was to ilustrate how joint work is managed while crossing geographical boundaries, consequently benefiting from the coordination efforts around a common objective and enabling to agree on strategies that promote sustainability.

The participants in this workshop were Philip James (Norway), Gercende Courtois de Viçose (ECOAQUA of the ULPGC, for Spain), Sylvain Huchette, France Haliotis (France), Ólavur Gregersen, Ocean Rainforest (Faroe Islands), Cliff Jones and Ann Wu, Rhodes University (South Africa).

The workshop is part of the seminar entitled 'Sustainable blue economy for ecological recovery' organized by CETMAR (Centro Tecnologico del Mar) held on May 19-20 on the occasion of the European Maritime Day in the Italian city of Ravenna.
