Ricardo Haroun takes office as Director of University Institute ECOAQUA

Last Friday, October 14th, at the Institutional Headquarters of the ULPGC, the Rector Lluís Serra Majem, together with the Secretary General, Inmaculada González, proclaimed Ricardo Jesús Haroun Tabraue, as Director of the Institute of Sustainable Aquaculture and Marine Ecosystems of the ULPGC, Rafael Ginés Ruiz, as Head of Service, and Adolfo Jiménez Jaén, as Secretary. The professor May Gómez Cabrera will assume the position of deputy director.

Ricardo Haroun is PhD in Biological Sciences and professor of the ULPGC, was officially proclaimed director of the institution on September 21st, after the elections to the Board of Directors of the University Institute ECOAQUA were held on the 13th of the same month.


After more than 30 years at the ULPGC, Ricardo Haroun, who is an expert in systematics, sustainability and conservation of marine biota, has more than 190 scientific publications, most of them focused on biodiversity and sustainable use of marine resources. A lifetime of university teaching and research activity, with more than 75 research projects and 26 research contracts and agreements, which has drived him, among other things, to be a member of the Commission on Ecosystem Management (CEM) of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) and to be part of scientific committees in different national, regional and island organizations linked to biodiversity management.

In the road map, with which the new management team of the University Institute ECOAQUA has promised for the next four years, it highlights the increase in the number of research projects of the scientific center, multiply the presence of researchers linked to the sustainable management of the marine environment and its resources, improve the procedures and mechanisms of management and control of the resources and attract new researchers both from the ULPGC and from other universities.
