The ULPGC presents the XII edition of the International Master in Aquaculture taught by the lecturers of ECOAQUA

The training offered in collaboration with CIHEAM is recognised as one of the most prestigious in the country

 

Next Tuesday, October 11th, the official presentation of the twelfth edition of the International Master in Marine Cultures of the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (ULPGC), taught by the lecturers of the Aquaculture Research Group (GIA) of the Institute for Research in Sustainable Aquaculture and Marine Ecosystems (ECOAQUA), with the collaboration of the International Center for Advanced Mediterranean Agronomic Studies of Zaragoza (CIHEAM), will take place at the Marine Science and Technology Park of Taliarte.

The Master's programme, whose classes started last October 3rd, is recognised as one of the most prestigious in the country, being one of the few international university master's degrees in aquatic species culture that is offered mainly in Spanish. It is jointly organised by the ULPGC, through the Faculty of Marine Sciences, and the CIHEAM of Zaragoza.

The rector of the ULPGC, Lluis Serra Majem, will be in charge of presiding over the opening ceremony, together with the director of the master's degree, Felix Acosta; the dean of the Faculty of Marine Sciences of the ULPGC, Maria Esther Torres; as well as the head of the Aquaculture Research Group (GIA), Juan Manuel Afonso, and the head of Training of CIHEAM, Ana Maria Sanchez.

The university studies, which include students from different Spanish universities, as well as from other countries such as Egypt, Tunisia, Algeria or Lebanon, consist of a first part of Postgraduate Specialization, made up of 60 ECTS credits, which constitutes the academic part of the Master's Degree and which will extend until June 2023. At the end of the course, the students who have passed the necessary academic tests will receive the will receive the Specialization Degree given by CIHEAM.

The students will then begin the second part of the master's degree, focused on the completion of the thesis of this training (final thesis), which involves an applied approach to aquaculture research. The latter will take place between June 2023 and June 2024. After this period, students will have to make a public defense of their thesis in any of the collaborating companies to which the tutor assigned to each student belongs, in order to finally get the Master's Degree.

The training received during this master's degree qualifies students not only in professional aquaculture research, but also in professional areas related to aquaculture, such as government administration, management of aquaculture farms or the development of specialised work in pharmaceutical companies, animal feed or aquariums, among other career paths.

According to data available to the ULPGC, 54 percent of the students who have benefited from this university training in previous editions have been able to work, both professionally and through specific scholarships, in research and development. In addition, 32 percent have been employed in companies and 15 percent work in university teaching in up to 5 countries.
