The Canary Archipelago advances in the management of its marine coastal space thanks to the help of the University institute ECOAQUA of the ULPGC

The institute has recently participated in the '1st Conference on 'The Marine Coastal Space of the Canary Islands: Planning and Governance' in Lanzarote and in the '3rd International Conference on Marine Spatial Planning' in Barcelona, to present the development of the specific plans for the Canary Islands, which will be approved this Christmas, according to MITECO

The Institute for Research in Sustainable Aquaculture and Marine Ecosystems (ECOAQUA) of the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (ULPGC) is supporting the Ministry of Ecological Transition, Fight against Climate Change and Territorial Planning of the Government of the Canary Islands in the implementation of the MSP-OR project: Advancing Maritime Spatial Planning in the Outermost Regions, in collaboration with the Ministry for Ecological Transition and Demographic Challenge (MITECO), MITECO's Biodiversity Foundation and other partners from Spain, France and Portugal.

This project aims to support the competent authorities for coastal and marine spatial planning in the establishment and adoption of the EU MSP Directive (2014/89/EU), as well as other management plans and instruments, in the outermost regions of Açores, Madeira, Canary Islands and French Guiana, with the support of their member states.

In the context of this project, which will be developed until 2024, the University Institute ECOAQUA participated at the end of November in the 'First Conference on the Canary Islands Marine Littoral Space: Planning and Governance', held in Arrecife, Lanzarote, organized by the Government of the Canary Islands, through the Ministry of Ecological Transition, Fight against Climate Change and Territorial Planning and the Ministry for Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge, in collaboration with the Biodiversity Foundation.

During the event, the maritime spatial plans for the Canary Islands marine demarcation were presented, which will be approved this coming Christmas, according to MITECO, as well as different tools for the planning and governance of the coastal marine environment developed by the Government of the Canary Islands and the Government of the Açores, respectively.

These IT tools aim to promote the interaction of the actors involved, organized in different topics related to the marine coastal space of the Canary Islands and the European outermost regions, resulting in the coordination and feedback necessary for an effective implementation of marine spatial planning.

All these objectives are included in the MSP-OR project, which was presented and promoted at the event, as well as in the Platform for Ocean Governance in the ORs.

The University Institute ECOAQUA was invited to present its latest advances and experience in international projects related to marine spatial planning such as PLASMAR+, MSP-OR and soon, also in ReMAP, in the framework of the 3rd International Conference on Marine Spatial Planning, organized by the Directorate General for Maritime Affairs and Fisheries of the European Union (DG MARE) and the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission of the United Nations (IOC-UNESCO), last November 22nd, 2022 in the city of Barcelona.

The aim of this conference was to evaluate the status of implementation of marine spatial planning and management, and to discuss the challenges and opportunities for achieving the priority areas and the main objective of the international roadmap for this discipline: to cover at least one third of the world's maritime areas under national jurisdiction with marine spatial management plans by 2030.
