ECOAQUA will offer 7 of the 17 informative talks linked to the International Sea Fair FIMAR 2025

Seven researchers from different groups of the university institute will give these lectures on Friday, 6 June and Saturday, 7 June, at the Muelle Sanapú in the capital of Gran Canaria during the 14th edition of this reference fair for the nautical and fishing sector, where a stand will also be located and several posters of scientific projects carried out by ECOAQUA will be exhibited.

Seven researchers from the ECOAQUA University Institute, belonging to the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (ULPGC), will give seven informative talks out of the 17 scheduled as part of the 14th edition of the International Sea Fair FIMAR 2025, which will take place between Friday 6 June and Sunday 8 June, World Oceans Day, at the Muelle Sanapú, in the vicinity of the Poema del Mar aquarium and the Pasarela Onda Atlántica walkway, in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria.

Thus, this fair, a regional event of reference for the nautical and marine-maritime sector throughout the Canary Islands, under the slogan “For the sustainability of the Canarian coastline”, has programmed an agenda of informative sessions open to the public, free access, and which will address different current scientific topics in the context of the oceans and the relationship of humans with the marine environment, with the Canary Islands Archipelago as the backbone.

The first of these talks given by members of ECOAQUA will be this coming Friday, 6 June, from 13:30 to 14:00, and will be entitled “Drifting colonies: biology and navigation of the Portuguese Caravel”, which will be given by Anna Cunill i Sáez, from the Ecophysiology of Marine Organisms Group (EOMAR).

On the same day, between 16:30 and 17:00, Sofía Huelbes Muñoz, also a member of EOMAR, will give the talk "How do we affect the ocean? Getting to know the multi-stressors with ASTRESS".

The researcher Sofía Huelbes Muñoz, from EOMAR, will be one of the speakers at the talks given by ECOAQUA.

The last of these Friday sessions on behalf of ECOAQUA will be given by Marina Gutiérrez García, from EOMAR, with the talk "What does physics have to do with biology in the oceans?". In this case, the talk will take place between 17:00 and 17:30.

FIMAR 2025, promoted by the Cabildo de Gran Canaria, the City Council of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, the Port Authority of Las Palmas and organised by Infecar Feria de Gran Canaria and Ciudad de Mar, will also host another four informative talks by ECOAQUA researchers on Saturday, 7 June.

The first of these will be given between 12:00 and 12:40 by Álvaro Cubas Viera, from the Physical Oceanography and Applied Geophysics Research Group (OFYGA), and will be entitled “Microplastics and their journey through the oceanic eddies of the Canary Islands”.

Afterwards, between 13:00 and 13:40, Jacob Stefan Torres Ojeda, from OFYGA, will give the talk “In the wake of the islands: exploring ocean dynamics with autonomous robots”.

Then, in the afternoon session, Giovanny Alejandro Cuervo Londoño, also from OFYGA, will give the talk “Towards a new era in ocean prediction with AI”. It will take place between 17:15 and 17:45.

Finally, under the title "Do sea bass like Canarian dates?", Charles Jouan, from the Aquaculture Research Group (GIA), will conclude ECOAQUA's participation in this scientific outreach section of FIMAR 2025 between 6:00 and 6:40 p.m.

Booth and Scientific Posters

In addition, as in previous years, the university institute will have its own booth at FIMAR 2025 with tables to showcase activities developed by its research groups. Several posters of scientific projects developed by ECOAQUA will be on display at the booth.

These will include: the "ASTRESS Project: Evaluation of Anthropogenic Multi-Stressors", by EOMAR researchers Alicia Herrera, Sofía Huelbes, Ico Martínez, and May Gómez; OFYGA will showcase a poster entitled "Front-eddy system: subduction or barrier?" Study case in the upwelling system off central Chile", from the FONDECYT project (A. Corredor-Acosta, Á. Rodríguez-Santana, C.E. Morales, S. Hormazabal) and the informative posters "Characterization and evolution of thermohaline intrusions in Cape Verde Frontal Zone", from the project: FLUXES (Á. Rodríguez-Santana, N. Burgoa, A. Martínez-Marrero, L. Valencia, Á. Marrero-Díaz, F. Machín) and "Comprehensive remote system for monitoring, detection and prediction of marine events potentially harmful to aquaculture farms", from the SIRENA project, financed by the European Maritime Fund for Fisheries and Aquaculture (FEMPA) within the framework of the Pleamar 2023 Program of the Biodiversity Foundation (Á. Rodríguez-Santana, A.J. González-Ramos, A. Mancho, Á. Marrero-Díaz, A. García)
